I like those type of rules. you can do the same with the Mario characters, Pokemon or even with the starfox team.

OH, I get it now! Ok-ok, I see how this works. There is only one problem... Suppose one person picks Eldin right? But another picks Lylat Cruise or Green Greens. What if one of the stages are selected by one of the players and they have the incorrect character for that match? Unless it's decided by both players, it could conflict with the rules. A cool idea, yet the game itself isn't that coordinated to do such a thing.

The game determines stages and rules by following the settings from one person, and then switching to the other person's in the next battle, right? If that's the case, then people could just remember who's settings were selected prior, and then follow up with them both choosing Eldin and the appropriate characters.

True. But for example, if it's my turn, I can choose whatever rule I want, however, it doesn't mean my opponent HAS to do the same. It's like saying this: "I am going to pick Pictochat and you must pick Ganondorf while I pick Fox" The other player shouldn't be forced to choose just because the other person said so. On the other hand however, a coin-flip can settle the situation. For example. To determine where the order begins, we both pick a stage. I pick Smashville and you pick Poke'mon Stadium (Brawl). Poke'mon Stadium (Brawl) is chosen so you go first. Then we quit the match and assume our pattern. I choose a stage and it goes to me under my settings. Now that we're clear with the pattern, we quit again so that you are given the freedom to choose a stage of your liking. Afterward, you decide that you want to do Castle Siege's rules and pick only Marth or Ike. Here's how it will work: We will decide on a coin-flip. Heads, you will select Castle Siege, and tails, you will select a character-specific-free stage for both you and your opponent. If you think about it, Noah for example could pick Falco and Lylat Cruise all the time. Pretend all of us suck with Starfox characters. If he wants to, he could screw all of us up by picking Lylat and the Starfox-character-only rule to his advantage. See my point?

Juan, point well taken. But I think that's the challenge. Clearly some would have an advantage over others in different character-stage combos but that would provoke the people of SSB to learn more characters other than their main. By that way, you don't limit yourself to the same gameplay and at the same time, you learn the weaknesses of each character that you get to use later on.
The thing now is to make a proper system so that it would be less susceptible to taking advantage of the character-stage rule and more adept at giving everyone a fair shot.
And oh yeah, could we combine some character stage combos like:
Oldies: Characters: Pit, Game & Watch, ROB, Ice Climbers Stages: Skyworld, Flat Zone 2, Mario Bros., Summit
3rd Party: Characters: Sonic, Snake Stages: Shadow Moses Island, Green Hill Zone
Bounty Hunters Characters: Captain Olimar, Captain Falcon, Samus Stages: Port Town Aero Dive, Distant Planet, Norfair, Frigate Orpheon, Big Blue, Brinstar
Mario Spin-offs Characters: Yoshi, DK, Diddy Kong, Wario Stages: Yoshi's Island (Brawl), Yoshi's Island (Melee), Jungle Japes, Rumble Falls, Wario Ware, 75m
Anyone Goes Characters: Any Stages: Battlefield, Final Destination, Pictochat, Smashville, Hanenbow

Then how about this (btw, I love your idea and you provided a good point too): One match has one person's rules while the other has the other person's rule. Then the third is randomized or decided whichever way. I only wanted to avoid people picking a character from a series their opponent can play as and beat them to a pulp and take advantage of it. We'll figure this out.

Or why not randomize everything :-P Have them all pre-selected before the tourney match-ups are made. Then when the tourney match-ups are made, just apply them in order to the board and just follow the rules. I think that would be a better idea. So we have how many themes: Mario Mario Spin-off Zelda Pokemon Kirby StarFox EarthBound Fire Emblem Oldies 3rd Party Bounty Hunters Anyone Goes So that's 12 sets of rules. Now just assign them 0-11 and randomize using a calculator :-P
